Walter Sisulu University

Walter Sisulu University (WSU) was established on 1 July 2005 through the merger of the former University of Transkei, Border Technikon and Eastern Cape Technikon, in terms of South Africa's post-apartheid higher education restructuring. It is named after Walter Max Ulyate Sisulu, a leading anti-apartheid struggle icon and close comrade of Nelson Mandela. WSU is a public comprehensive university (offering both university and technikon-type qualifications) with approximately 30,000 students and close to 1,800 staff. It operates across four campuses in the Eastern Cape: Mthatha, Buffalo City (East London), Butterworth, and Komani (Queenstown). WSU is organised into seven faculties and is particularly known for its Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences (including its medical school in Mthatha), its Faculty of Education (its largest faculty), and its role as a major provider of higher education access to students from rural Eastern Cape communities.
