The University of KwaZulu-Natal was formed on 1 January 2004 through the merger of the University of Natal (founded 1910 as Natal University College) and the University of Durban-Westville (established in the 1960s, granted university status in 1971). It is a large public research university with roughly 46,000-47,000 students. UKZN operates across five campuses in the province: Howard College and Westville in Durban, Pietermaritzburg, Edgewood, and the Nelson R. Mandela School of Medicine. The university is organised into four colleges – Humanities; Agriculture, Engineering and Science; Health Sciences; and Law and Management Studies – and is known for strengths in medicine and health sciences, engineering, agricultural and environmental science, and African-centred humanities and social science scholarship, along with a strong research output and postgraduate programme base. It positions itself as one of Africa's leading research-intensive universities.
