Stellenbosch University (SU) was formally established on 2 April 1918 under the University Act, growing out of Victoria College, the Stellenbosch Gymnasium (1866) and the Dutch Reformed Church's Theological Seminary (1859). It opened with four faculties, 503 students and 40 lecturers. Today SU is a large public research university based in Stellenbosch, Western Cape, with roughly 32,000–35,000 students, about 3,400–3,500 academic/professional staff, and five campuses (Stellenbosch main campus, Tygerberg for Medicine and Health Sciences, Bellville Park for the Business School and School of Public Leadership, Saldanha for Military Science, and the Ukwanda rural clinical training site). It comprises 10 faculties and roughly 139 departments. SU is consistently ranked among South Africa's top research universities (QS ~302 globally in 2026; THE ~301–350 band, 2nd in Africa on some THE metrics) and is particularly known for engineering, agricultural sciences, medicine and health sciences, business, and natural sciences.
