University of the Witwatersrand (Wits)

Johannesburg, Gauteng

The University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) traces its origins to the South African School of Mines, established in Kimberley in 1896, which relocated to Johannesburg and evolved through several names before being proclaimed a full university on 1 March 1922. It is one of South Africa's oldest and most research-intensive universities and a member of the international Worldwide Universities Network. As of the mid-2020s, Wits enrols roughly 40,000 students across five campuses, all situated in Johannesburg, with its main Braamfontein/Parktown precincts. Wits is organised into five faculties comprising 33 schools offering over 3,000 courses. It is particularly renowned for mining engineering, health sciences (including a leading medical school), law, and world-class palaeoscience and astronomy research (linked to fossil discoveries such as Australopithecus sediba at the nearby Cradle of Humankind), and is consistently ranked among the top universities in Africa.
