The University of Mpumalanga (UMP) is one of South Africa's two newest public universities, formally promulgated in August 2013 and launched in October 2013. It enrolled its first cohort of 169 students in February 2014 across just three programmes. Since then it has grown steadily, offering 26 qualifications to about 4,200 students by 2020, 48 qualifications to roughly 7,100 students by 2022, and by 2025 around 78 qualifications to close to 12,000 students. UMP operates two campuses: the main Mbombela campus (on the R40/D725 roads near Mbombela) and the Siyabuswa campus in the north of the province. As a young institution, it was established partly to expand higher education access in a previously underserved province, and it is particularly known for its focus on agriculture, ICT, hospitality and tourism management, and foundation-phase teacher education, with programmes ranging from higher certificates and diplomas through to doctoral degrees.
