Akademia NPC

Gauteng

Akademia is a Christian, classical and independent private higher education institution established for and by Afrikaans-speaking language and cultural communities in South Africa. It began operating on 3 January 2011 with an initial intake of 42 students across four programmes, and received full registration as a private higher education institution from the Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET) on 30 May 2017, under registration number 2011/HE08/005 (operated by Akademia MSW, company registration number 2005/024616/08), in terms of the Higher Education Act, 1997. Its stated mission is to form both intellect and character ("denke en hart") toward a free future, while preserving Afrikaans as a language of teaching, learning and scholarship. Akademia offers two study models: full-time contact study at its campuses in Centurion/Pretoria and, from 2026, a new Paarl campus in the Western Cape (provisionally approved), as well as part-time distance study through a network of study centres across South Africa. Academic offerings are organised into five faculties: Economic and Management Sciences, Humanities, Education, Natural Sciences, and Law. By its April 2024 graduation ceremony the institution had conferred 465 qualifications for that year alone, reflecting substantial growth since its 2011 founding.
