Project Literacy Education Centres NPC is a South African non-profit organisation founded as a grassroots literacy initiative in 1973 and formally registered as a non-profit company in 1986 (Registration No. 1986/004771/08, NPO No. 122-216, PBO No. 130000753). Headquartered in Arcadia, Pretoria, with regional offices reaching all nine provinces, it is a leading provider of Adult Education and Training (AET), Early Childhood Development (ECD) support, and youth skills development, and describes its vision as being the leading, socially relevant literacy agency in South Africa. Its accreditations include quality assurance by the ETDP SETA for AET Practitioner qualifications and unit standard-based short courses, Umalusi approval for Adult Education and Training delivery, registration with the Independent Examinations Board (IEB) for Foundational Learning Competence (FLC), and registration as a private college (Reg. No. 2024/FE07/004) authorised to offer GETC ABET subjects. It is registered for the Skills Development Levy with SARS and holds BBBEE Level 1 status. Since 1973 the organisation reports having reached more than 950,000 adult learners, trained over 3,500 AET practitioners since 2000, and, through its flagship Run Home to Read family literacy programme (launched 2006), reached thousands of families with early literacy support. Other initiatives include Funda Sizwane (Foundation Phase reading comprehension) and The Big Blue Book Bus mobile library project in Gauteng.
