Overview
CS50’s Introduction to Computer Science is Harvard University’s flagship entry-level computer science course, taught by David J. Malan and made available free on edX (cs50.edx.org). It teaches students to think algorithmically and solve problems efficiently, starting with the C programming language to build an understanding of variables, conditionals, loops, functions, and how computers work under the hood, before moving on to Python, and finishing with SQL, HTML, CSS, and JavaScript. Along the way it covers abstraction, algorithms, data structures, memory management, security, and software engineering.
The course is designed for both majors and non-majors, with or without prior programming experience, and is fully self-paced, so learners work through problem sets on their own schedule. To earn a certificate, students must complete nine problem sets (programming assignments) with a satisfactory score and build a final project of their own design.
CS50 is free to take and free to audit. Learners who want official recognition can pay for a verified certificate from HarvardX via edX; without it, the course content and problem sets remain fully accessible at no cost.
