Introduction to Cyber Security

Overview

Introduction to Cyber Security is an eight-week course from The Open University, delivered on FutureLearn and guided by writer and activist Cory Doctorow. It is built around the security threat landscape and practical protection: the early weeks cover strong passwords, two-factor authentication, malware types and how they spread, and common attacks, before moving into cryptography, network security, firewalls, virtual private networks, and network intrusion detection and prevention. The course also touches on the legal and regulatory issues around cybersecurity and is supported by the UK Government’s National Cyber Security Programme, with IISP accreditation.

It suits complete beginners who want a solid grounding in staying safe online and understanding the fundamentals of how systems are attacked and defended, requiring only around three hours of study per week and no prior technical background.

The course itself is free to join and audit on FutureLearn, with The Open University currently offering a free digital upgrade for full access to course materials; a paid certificate of achievement is also available as an optional upgrade for those who want formal proof of completion.
