MA120: Applied College Algebra

Overview

MA120: Applied College Algebra is a free, self-paced Saylor Academy course that extends basic algebra into intermediate territory, with real-world application problems built into each unit. Topics include systems of linear equations and inequalities, quadratic equations, exponential and logarithmic functions, operations with rational expressions, linear functions, and graphing, with the course working toward practical modelling of word problems rather than algebra in the abstract. Basic algebra knowledge is a stated prerequisite.

This makes it a good fit for learners who have already covered introductory algebra (for example, at NSC/matric level) and want to consolidate and extend those skills before a college-level math, science, commerce, or engineering course, as well as adults returning to study who need a refresher on algebraic techniques.

The course runs about 36 hours and offers a free certificate of completion once the final exam is passed. Saylor’s college-credit recommendation is aimed at the US ACE/NCCRS system, so it should be treated as solid, verifiable self-study preparation rather than a guaranteed credit transfer for South African institutions.
