Note: HWSETA funds bursaries through Expression of Interest (EOI) windows submitted by universities, TVET colleges or employers rather than through direct individual applications. The most recently published windows (general 2026/2027 funding EOI, closed 20 February 2026; Postgraduate Research Bursaries for Unemployed Persons 2025/2026, closed 6 February 2026) have already passed, and dates for the next (2027/2028) cycle were not yet published on hwseta.org.za as of August 2026.

Overview

HWSETA funds bursaries for students in health and social development fields, channelled through registered universities, TVET colleges and employers rather than through direct individual applications.

What it covers

Tuition, accommodation, study materials/books and living allowances for qualifying students; amounts vary by programme (e.g. postgraduate research bursaries were capped at up to R100,000 per learner in the most recent window).

Eligibility

South African students (employed or unemployed) enrolled at, or nominated by, an HWSETA-registered public university, university of technology, TVET college, or registered employer in the health and welfare sector. Individuals cannot apply directly to HWSETA.

Required documents

Institution/employer-submitted application form, proof of registration or enrolment, certified ID copy, and (for postgraduate research bursaries) proof of prior academic record and the institution's Workplace Skills Plan submission proof.
