Cape Peninsula University of Technology (CPUT) was established on 1 January 2005 through the merger of the Cape Technikon and Peninsula Technikon, as part of South Africa's post-apartheid restructuring of higher education. Its roots trace back to the Cape Technical College founded in 1920. CPUT is a public university of technology and is the largest university in the Western Cape by student enrolment, with more than 35,000 students, and the only university of technology in the province. It operates across five campuses (including Bellville, Cape Town/District Six, Granger Bay, Mowbray and Wellington) plus several service points. CPUT offers more than 80 career-focused undergraduate and postgraduate qualifications through six faculties, and is particularly known for applied, vocationally oriented education in engineering, business, design, health sciences and applied sciences, with strong industry partnerships and technology stations supporting innovation and applied research.
