Tshwane University of Technology (TUT) is a public university of technology established on 1 January 2004 through the merger of three predecessor technikons: Technikon Northern Gauteng, Technikon North-West, and Technikon Pretoria. It is South Africa's largest residential higher education institution by enrollment, with more than 60,000 students drawn from across South Africa and the wider African continent. TUT's main campuses are located in Pretoria (including the Pretoria main, Arcadia/Arts, Soshanguve South and North, and Ga-Rankuwa campuses), with further campuses in eMalahleni (Mpumalanga), Mbombela (Mpumalanga), Polokwane (Limpopo), and a planned Giyani campus. It offers over 300 study programmes across eight faculties. TUT is the only South African tertiary institution with a stand-alone Faculty of ICT, and its Faculty of Engineering and the Built Environment is described as the largest in the country. Independent rankings (Times Higher Education, 2022) placed its ICT and Engineering programmes among the global top 900 and top 400 respectively; it has been ranked among South Africa's top 13 universities (CWUR, 2024) and fourth nationally for creative research outputs, supported by 70 NRF-rated researchers, 17 research chairs, and 16 research centres/institutes.
