The University of Johannesburg (UJ) was established on 1 January 2005 through the merger of Rand Afrikaans University, Technikon Witwatersrand, and the Soweto and East Rand campuses of Vista University — a consolidation undertaken as part of post-apartheid restructuring of South African higher education, bringing together a traditional university, a technikon and a historically black institution. It is a public comprehensive university (offering both traditional academic and vocationally-oriented qualifications) spread across four campuses in Johannesburg: Auckland Park Kingsway, Auckland Park Bunting Road, Doornfontein, and Soweto. UJ enrols roughly 50,000 students in total (around 41,600 undergraduate and 9,000 postgraduate), including more than 3,000 international students from over 80 countries, making it one of the largest universities in South Africa. It is organised into a College of Business and Economics plus seven other faculties. UJ has climbed steadily in global rankings (QS World University Rankings placed it around 292–308th globally in the 2026/2027 editions, ranked second in South Africa and Africa), with home-grown strengths in engineering technology, nanotechnology, energy studies, and DNA barcoding research, and over 340 NRF-rated researchers.
