Overview

Algebra Basics is Khan Academy’s free, self-paced introduction to algebra, organised into units on foundational number skills, algebraic expressions, linear equations and inequalities, graphing lines and slope, systems of equations, exponent rules, and an introduction to quadratics and polynomials.

It suits anyone starting algebra from scratch or needing to patch gaps before a full algebra course, including adult learners refreshing forgotten skills. South African matric students working through the algebra and functions sections of NSC Mathematics can use it to build the same underlying skills, though the unit order and examples follow a US teaching sequence rather than the CAPS syllabus, so it works best as a supplementary skills-builder rather than a direct substitute for classroom material.

Like all Khan Academy content, the course is completely free and self-paced, combining short instructional videos with unlimited practice exercises and progress tracking, so learners walk away with solid footing in expressions, equations and graphing before moving on to a full algebra course.
