Overview
Khan Academy’s High School Biology course covers core biology topics across units including cells and their structure, energy and matter in biological systems (photosynthesis and cellular respiration), cell division and genetics, human body systems, ecology and natural systems, and evolution. The course was recently updated to align with the US Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS), and combines video lessons with articles and practice exercises for each unit.
It’s aimed at high school students studying biology, as well as self-learners wanting a structured refresher on core life-science concepts. South African matric students taking Life Sciences will find real overlap in topics like cells, genetics, human body systems, ecology and evolution, but because the course follows US NGSS standards rather than CAPS, it’s best treated as a supplementary resource for understanding concepts rather than a direct match to the NSC Life Sciences syllabus or exam format.
The course is free and self-paced, with unlimited practice questions, so learners walk away with a stronger conceptual grasp of key biology topics to support classroom study.
