Python Essentials 1

Overview

Python Essentials 1 is a beginner-level programming course developed jointly by Cisco Networking Academy and the OpenEDG Python Institute. Across four modules it builds up from core programming concepts (compilers, interpreters, source code, IDEs) through Python syntax, data types, variables, and arithmetic operators, into control flow using conditionals and loops, and then data structures — lists, tuples, dictionaries, and strings — before finishing with functions, name scope, and exception handling for debugging. Throughout, the course also reinforces PEP8 coding conventions and good documentation practices.

It has no prerequisites beyond basic maths comfort, and is aimed at secondary and two-year college students as well as general learners with little or no prior coding experience — a solid option for students who want a practical coding credential alongside a formal IT or computer science qualification. It takes about 30 hours and includes 30 hands-on labs, a final project, and a final test.

Learners earn a Cisco digital badge and finish prepared to sit the PCEP – Certified Entry-Level Python Programmer exam, with Python Essentials 2 as the natural next step.
