Nelson Mandela University

Nelson Mandela University traces its origins to 1882 (the Port Elizabeth Art School) and was formed in its current shape in January 2005 through the merger of the University of Port Elizabeth, Port Elizabeth Technikon, and the Port Elizabeth campus of Vista University. Originally named Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University, it was renamed Nelson Mandela University on 20 July 2017. It is a public university with approximately 27,000 students — the largest higher education provider in the Eastern and Southern Cape — operating across multiple campuses in Gqeberha (Port Elizabeth) plus a campus in George, including a dedicated Ocean Sciences campus. The university offers over 500 study programmes across seven faculties. It is particularly known for engineering, marine and ocean sciences (supported by its Institute for Coastal and Marine Research), environmental sciences, law, health sciences (including a medical school offering the MBChB) and renewable energy research.
