The Central University of Technology, Free State (CUT) was established as Technikon Free State in 1981, opening with 285 students, and gained university-of-technology status in 2004 as part of South African higher education restructuring (its 2004 reconstitution also incorporated the former Vista University Welkom campus). CUT is a public university of technology with roughly 22,000 students, operating two campuses: its main campus in Bloemfontein (the judicial capital of South Africa) and a second campus in Welkom in the Free State goldfields. It offers qualifications from certificates and diplomas through to master's and doctoral degrees across four faculties. CUT emphasises applied research and practical, industry-linked education, and is particularly known for its Centre for Rapid Prototyping and Manufacturing (a pioneer of 3D printing for medical devices in Africa), its entrepreneurial education (ACEEU-accredited), and its STEM, health sciences and management sciences programmes.
