Vaal University of Technology (VUT) traces its origins to the Vaal Triangle College for Advanced Technical Education, which opened in Vanderbijlpark in 1966 with 189 students. It became a Technikon in 1979 and was reclassified as a University of Technology in 2004 as part of South Africa's post-apartheid higher education restructuring. VUT is a public university of technology with an enrolment of roughly 19,000-21,000 students, one of the largest of its kind in South Africa. Its main campus is in Vanderbijlpark (Gauteng), with an additional Science Park at Sebokeng, and further programme delivery sites at Ekurhuleni, Secunda and Upington. VUT is organised into four faculties offering around 39 programmes, and is particularly known for career-focused, technology- and industry-oriented qualifications in engineering, applied and computer sciences, and management sciences aimed at the Vaal Triangle's industrial economy.
