South Cape TVET College was established in 2000 through the merger of four predecessor institutions: George Technical College (founded 1968), Oudtshoorn Technical College (founded 1981), South Cape Technical Institute (established in the early 1980s), and Mossel Bay Technical College (operating since 1993). It served as the pilot site for TVET college mergers in South Africa, with further college mergers nationally following from 2002. The college operates six campuses — George (head office), Beaufort West, Bitou (Plettenberg Bay), Hessequa (Riversdale), Mossel Bay, and Oudtshoorn — covering the Garden Route, Kannaland and Central Karoo districts, a catchment area of about 80,822 km², making it the largest of the six TVET colleges in the Western Cape.
