College of Cape Town traces its origins to 1900, making it the oldest institution among South Africa's TVET colleges, and took its present name and form on 1 February 2002 when four former technical colleges — Athlone College, Cape College, Sivuyile College and Western Province Technical College (Maitland/Pinelands) — were merged, as part of a national process that reduced roughly 150 colleges to about 50.
