Overview
This is an entry-level course on NEMISA’s free Digital Skills Platform (dsp.nemisa.co.za) that introduces the core ideas behind artificial intelligence and machine learning: what AI systems actually do, how they are trained on data, common terminology, and where AI already shows up in everyday tools and workplaces. It is a literacy course rather than a technical machine-learning programme, so it focuses on building understanding and vocabulary rather than teaching learners to build AI models themselves.
It suits people with no coding or data science background who want to make sense of AI’s growing role in work and society, including students, job seekers, teachers, and public-sector employees. It also gives a useful grounding for anyone deciding whether to pursue more technical AI or data courses later.
Learners come away with a working understanding of AI concepts and terms, a clearer sense of AI’s practical uses and limitations, awareness of using AI tools responsibly, and a certificate of completion from NEMISA, a public entity under South Africa’s Department of Communications and Digital Technologies.
