BUS101: Introduction to Business

Overview

BUS101: Introduction to Business is a free, self-paced survey course from Saylor Academy that builds a working business vocabulary while introducing core concepts across five units: the economic and legal context of business, entrepreneurship and legal forms of business (sole proprietorships, partnerships, corporations), marketing, accounting/finance/banking, and management. Lessons draw on real-world examples, including well-known entrepreneurs, to connect theory to practice. By the end, learners can explain how economic indicators and business cycles affect decisions, compare legal business structures, describe the marketing mix, read balance sheets and income statements, and identify core management and leadership competencies.

It suits anyone wanting a broad, no-cost grounding in business terminology before tackling a formal qualification, small business owners wanting a vocabulary refresher, or career-changers testing interest in the field. No prior business background is assumed.

The course takes about 62 hours and includes readings, exercises, and a free certificate of completion on passing the final exam. Saylor’s college-credit recommendation is an ACE/NCCRS pathway used mainly by US institutions, so South African learners should treat this as strong self-study and CV evidence rather than a guaranteed transfer-credit route locally.
