CS101: Introduction to Programming I

Overview

CS101: Introduction to Programming I is a free Saylor Academy course that teaches computational thinking through Java. It is organized into eight units: Computer Programming, Variables and Operators, Input and Output, Methods and Testing, Conditionals and Logic, Loops and Strings, Arrays and References, and Recursive Methods. Learners come away able to explain how computers and the JVM work, use variables, operators, and control structures, write and test simple Java programs, handle input/output and exceptions, and compare recursive and iterative approaches to solving problems.

It is aimed at complete beginners who want a first, structured introduction to programming logic before committing to a formal computer science qualification or bootcamp, as well as anyone curious whether software development is a good fit for them, at no cost.

The course takes roughly 26-52 hours depending on the source consulted, is self-paced, and includes a free certificate of completion after the final exam. It carries a US college-credit recommendation through ACE/NCCRS, which is not directly transferable to South African institutions, but the Java fundamentals and certificate are a genuine, verifiable starting point for further study or a portfolio.
