Cybersecurity Fundamentals

Overview

Cybersecurity Fundamentals is a foundations-level course on NEMISA’s free Digital Skills Platform (dsp.nemisa.co.za) that introduces the basics of protecting digital devices, accounts, and information from common threats. It covers core cybersecurity concepts and vocabulary, everyday risks such as phishing, malware, and weak passwords, and practical habits for staying safer online at home, in school, or at work.

This course sits alongside a broader national push to build cyber skills in South Africa — NEMISA has separately partnered with organisations such as Google Cloud to roll out more advanced, certificate-track cybersecurity training — but this particular course is the entry point: no prior IT or security background is needed, making it suitable for general learners, students, and employees who handle digital information but aren’t security specialists.

Learners walk away with practical digital-hygiene skills, a clearer understanding of common threats and how to respond to them, and a NEMISA certificate of completion, which can serve as a first step before pursuing more advanced, industry-recognised cybersecurity certifications.
