The Central University of Technology, Free State (CUT) was established as Technikon Free State in 1981, opening with 285 students, and gained university-of-technology status in 2004 as part of South African higher education restructuring (its 2004 reconstitution also incorporated the former Vista University Welkom campus). CUT is a public university of technology with roughly 22,000 students, operating two campuses: its main campus in Bloemfontein (the judicial capital of South Africa) and a second campus in Welkom in the Free State goldfields.

Durban University of Technology

The Durban University of Technology (DUT) traces its lineage to institutions dating back over a century (it marked its centenary in 2007); it was formed when the ML Sultan Technikon and Technikon Natal merged on 1 April 2002 to create the Durban Institute of Technology, which was renamed DUT in March 2006. DUT is a public university of technology with roughly 30,000 students, operating across seven campuses — five in Durban and two in Pietermaritzburg — in KwaZulu-Natal.

Mangosuthu University of Technology

Mangosuthu University of Technology (MUT) originated from a 1974 initiative by KwaZulu Chief Minister Dr Mangosuthu Buthelezi to establish a technical tertiary institution for black students during the apartheid era; it began teaching in 1979 with just 15 students, was known as Mangosuthu Technikon, and was renamed Mangosuthu University of Technology in November 2007. MUT is a public university of technology with approximately 14,500 students, roughly gender-balanced, and is distinguished as the only university of technology situated in a township — Umlazi, on the outskirts of Durban, KwaZulu-Natal.

The University of Mpumalanga (UMP) is one of South Africa’s two newest public universities, formally promulgated in August 2013 and launched in October 2013. It enrolled its first cohort of 169 students in February 2014 across just three programmes.

Sol Plaatje University (SPU) is a public university established in 2014, the first entirely new South African university created since 1994 and the only university based in the Northern Cape province. It is named after Sol Plaatje, the writer and intellectual.

The University of Cape Town (UCT) is a public research university and South Africa’s oldest university, tracing its origins to 1829 as the South African College, initially a high school. It grew into a tertiary institution after the 1880s mineral (gold/diamond) boom funded expansion, and was formally granted university status in 1918 following bequests from Alfred Beit, Julius Wernher, and Otto Beit.

University of the Witwatersrand (Wits)

The University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) traces its origins to the South African School of Mines, established in Kimberley in 1896, which relocated to Johannesburg and evolved through several names before being proclaimed a full university on 1 March 1922. It is one of South Africa’s oldest and most research-intensive universities and a member of the international Worldwide Universities Network.

Stellenbosch University (SU) was formally established on 2 April 1918 under the University Act, growing out of Victoria College, the Stellenbosch Gymnasium (1866) and the Dutch Reformed Church’s Theological Seminary (1859). It opened with four faculties, 503 students and 40 lecturers.

University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN)

The University of KwaZulu-Natal was formed on 1 January 2004 through the merger of the University of Natal (founded 1910 as Natal University College) and the University of Durban-Westville (established in the 1960s, granted university status in 1971). It is a large public research university with roughly 46,000-47,000 students.
