South West Gauteng TVET College (SWGC) is a public Technical and Vocational Education and Training college operating under South Africa’s Department of Higher Education and Training in terms of the Continuing Education and Training Act, 2006. Its head office is at Molapo Campus in Soweto, with further campuses at Dobsonville, George Tabor and Roodepoort West, plus Roodepoort Campus and Technisa Campus (Randburg, focused on distance/e-learning), and the ‘Land is Wealth Farm’ in Sterkfontein used for primary agriculture training.

Tshwane North TVET College (TNC) is a public technical and vocational education and training college established in 2002 through the merger of the former Mamelodi, Pretoria, and Soshanguve Further Education and Training (FET) colleges (one predecessor campus, Mamelodi, was earlier known as Thuto Matlhale before becoming Mamelodi College). The college falls under the Department of Higher Education and Training and is based in Pretoria Central, Gauteng, with a corporate office at the corner of Kgosi Mampuru and Pretorius Streets.

Boland TVET College

Boland TVET College traces its roots to 1998, when the Western Cape Education Department consolidated 15 existing technical colleges into six larger institutions; the merger process for Boland concluded in 2001, bringing together older institutions dating back to 1918 (Stellenbosch), 1963 (Strand), 1968 (Paarl) and 1970 (Worcester, which also absorbed Söhnge Teachers’ College). It is a rural-based college with five campuses: Stellenbosch (head office), Paarl, Worcester, Strand and Caledon (opened 2002).

College of Cape Town for TVET

College of Cape Town traces its origins to 1900, making it the oldest institution among South Africa’s TVET colleges, and took its present name and form on 1 February 2002 when four former technical colleges — Athlone College, Cape College, Sivuyile College and Western Province Technical College (Maitland/Pinelands) — were merged, as part of a national process that reduced roughly 150 colleges to about 50. It operates from campuses across Cape Town including Athlone, City, Crawford, Gardens, Guguletu, Pinelands, Thornton and Wynberg, with its central office in Salt River, and has previously reported enrolment above 11,000 students.

False Bay TVET College is a public TVET college established in 2002, serving the South Peninsula, Mitchell’s Plain and Khayelitsha areas of Cape Town, Western Cape. It operates five campuses: Fish Hoek, Khayelitsha, Mitchells Plain, Muizenberg and Westlake.

Northlink TVET College

Northlink College, based in Cape Town’s northern suburbs, was established in 2002 when South Africa’s technical colleges were reformed into the new FET system: Wingfield Technical College (with Wingfield, Goodwood and Table Bay campuses), Tygerberg College (Tygerberg and Parow), Protea College and Bellville Technical College merged to form a single institution. In 2005 Northlink also acquired Belhar College, previously a private institution.

South Cape TVET College was established in 2000 through the merger of four predecessor institutions: George Technical College (founded 1968), Oudtshoorn Technical College (founded 1981), South Cape Technical Institute (established in the early 1980s), and Mossel Bay Technical College (operating since 1993). It served as the pilot site for TVET college mergers in South Africa, with further college mergers nationally following from 2002.

West Coast TVET College

West Coast College was officially declared a Further Education and Training (FET) College in 2002 — the last FET college formed in the Western Cape — built up from several smaller satellite institutions rather than around one existing technical college; it took the TVET College name in 2015. Its campuses each have distinct histories: Atlantis (started in the 1980s as Atlantis Technical Institute, joined Protea College in 1993, then West Coast in 2002), Citrusdal (opened 1999 under Tygerberg College), Vredenburg (formerly Westlake College, joined 1999), Vredendal (established 1997) and Malmesbury (opened 2005).

Coastal TVET College

KwaZulu-Natal

Coastal KZN TVET College was formed from a merger of the former Durban Technical College, Swinton Road Technical College and Umlazi Technical College, together with the former Umbumbulu and Appelsbosch colleges of education. It is the largest TVET college in KwaZulu-Natal, with about 15,000 full-time equivalent students and roughly 800 staff, operating across eight campuses: Durban (main administrative centre), Umlazi V, Umlazi BB, Ubuhle Bogu, Umbumbulu, Swinton, As-Salaam and Appelsbosch.
